What are the advantages of the mature Dwarf Key Lime tree planted from seed? For starters, these are among the most gorgeous dwarf citrus specimens on our farm. Moderately sized at about 18 to 24 inches, with bushy heads, nice trunks and lush foliage. These dwarf Key Lime trees are from seed and just over a years old. You should expect blooms in the 2nd or 3rd year. These are great specimens for you customers wanting to bonsai a lime tree, or needing a nice tree that does not require much space. These make great gifts!

Even though this true Key Lime tree has thorns (like most other citrus trees), it will produces more fruit, on average, than the typical grafted Thornless Key Lime tree.

Without a doubt, the Key Lime tree is the most popular Dwarf Lime Tree in North America. Its' fruit is prized by chefs from just about every ethnic group. Whether used in a drink, sauce, marinade, or dessert, the brisk flavor and aroma of the Key Lime is unmistakable. Although not as cold hardy as some dwarf citrus trees, the dwarf Key Lime tree can be successfully container-grown on a sunny porch. It does not tolerate frost and must be moved indoors during cold weather. But, as some fruit is borne year-round, we consider this a good thing! The Key Lime is known by many names, including Mexican, West Indian and Bartender Lime. Believed to be a native citrus fruit of southeastern Asia, limes have been cultivated for thousands of years. More recently, Columbus is said to have obtained lime seeds (among other fruit varieties) during a stop at the Canary Islands in 1493, his second voyage to the Western Hemisphere. According to several historical accounts, Columbus planted lime groves on the Island of Hispaniola, which were later gathered by Spanish conquistadors, and planted in St. Augustine, Florida. The most familiar lore regarding limes is its use in curing scurvy during the last part of the eighteenth century. British sailors (known even today as "limeys") carried limes and other citrus fruit on long voyages to cure and prevent the debilitating symptoms of the disease. Although they did not know it back then, the chemical that actually cured the disease was ascorbic acid, or vitamin C. It's no secret that the Key Lime is an excellent source.
